Minninglow - Peak District Walk
Tuesday 3rd March 2026
Walking in February didn't happen thanks to all the rain, with dry days only happening when I had other commitments. Now that March has arrived the weather has remembered that we can have days without rain, so I was finally able to get out for a walk. This is a route I have had on my to do list for a couple of years and I finally got around to doing today.
Start: Minninglow car park (SK 1946 5816)
Route: Minninglow car park - High Peak Trail - Aleck Low - Cardlemere Lane - Minninglow Lane - High Peak Trail - Minninglow - High Peak Trail - Minninglow car park
Distance: 8.5 miles Ascent: 228 metres Time Taken: 3 hrs 37 mins
Terrain: Fields, quiet lanes and tracks
Weather: Dry and warm
Pub Visited: None Ale Drunk: None
When I arrived at the car park my intention had been to head south and visit Minninglow first, but as everyone leaving was heading in that direction I decided to reverse the walk and headed north towards Aleck Low instead.
From the High Peak Trail I can look across the fields to Stanton Moor and beyond.
Looking across one of the limestone embankments, that carry the High Peak Trail, towards Minninglow.
I was surprised at how quiet this part of the trail was, I usually see quite a lot of cyclists whenever I walk along here.
Aleck Low comes into view. Although I have walked this stretch of the High Peak Trail frequently, especially during 2020, I have never visited Aleck Low, mainly because I knew you couldn't access the summit or trigpoint.
Opposite the entrance to Upperhouse Farm I take the footpath towards Aleck Low, which initially heads up this track.
The track towards Aleck Low is both well signed and easy to follow across the fields. Pausing to catch my breath I enjoy the view back towards Minninglow.
This was as close as I could get to Aleck Low without trespassing, which I had no intention of doing.
I was surprised at how far away from the trees the trig was as I'd always thought it was almost in them.
Rather than do an out and back to both summits I have opted for a circular walk, so I head downhill and enjoy views across the fields to the distinctive Lean Low.
Looking back to Aleck Low as I head downhill.
Lean Low dominates the view as I'm almost at the road.
I was grateful I had done a bit of research and knew this track was the way out of the fields, as it wasn't obvious which way I should have gone after the last stile. It was only because I recognised the gate from someone's YouTube video that I avoided heading for the wrong gate.
The first section of Cardlemere Lane was a bit of a trudge as there weren't any views to be had.
Reaching the summit of Cardlemere Lane and so far I hadn't seen anyone since leaving the High Peak Trail.
Looking back from the top of Cardlemere Lane.
Once I had reached the top of Cardlemere Lane the view changed and as I headed downhill I could enjoy looking across to Harboro Rocks and Minninglow.
As I walked along Minninglow Lane some snowdrops came into view.
Looking across to Roystone Rocks from Minninglow Lane.
Although I have walked along this embankment numerous times this was the first time I was seeing it from this direction.
Looking back down Minninglow Lane as I reach the High Peak Trail.
I will only be on the trail for a short section as I will be diverting off it at the next signpost to head up to Minninglow.
As with Aleck Low despite walking below here numerous times I have never diverted off the High Peak Trail to visit Minninglow.
Heading into the tress that surround the tombs at Minninglow.
The stones that cover the tombs at Minninglow.
Another view of the barrows at Minninglow.
I debated having lunch at Minninglow but the view from outside the trees was too good to miss.
I sat on the limestone rocks, just below Minninglow, and enjoyed the view across the High Peak Trail to Aleck Low.
Back on the High Peak Trail I look back up to Minninglow.
All that remains now is to make the short and flat walk back along the High Peak Trail to the car.
Looking across to the embankment that will take me back to the car.
One final look at Minninglow as I approach the car park.
