Foxlow Edge - Peak District Walk

Tuesday 10th March 2026

I had originally planned to do Combs Moss today but then read that there is forestry work going on in the woods used to access the plateau, so didn't fancy negotiating a lot of fallen trees and the mess the work results in. Instead I stayed in the area and visited an old favourite to do a route I'm very familiar with.

Start: Errwood Hall car park (SK 0124 7480)

Route: Errwood Hall car park - Errwood Hall - Foxlow Edge - The Street - Pym Chair - The Tors - Shining Tor (TP) - Stake Side - Shooter's Clough - Errwood Hall - Errwood Hall car park

Distance: 6.25 miles     Ascent: 404 metres      Time Taken: 3 hrs 4 mins

Goyt Valley

Leaving Errwood Hall car park and heading for the path to Errwood Hall.

Goyt Valley

It is very quiet as I head along the track to the hall.

Errwood Hall

Surprisingly there isn't even anyone at Errwood Hall.

Goyt Valley

It is two years since I last did this walk and the bridge over the stream still hasn't been replaced, although it was easy enough to cross.

Goyt Valley

Heading towards the start of the climb onto Foxlow Edge and I pass this tree, whose shape I love.

Foxlow Edge

After the steep start it is always nice to reach the section where Foxlow Edge starts to flatten out.

Wild Moor

Not least because then you start to get the views across the Goyt Valley to Wild Moor and Goyt's Moss.

Combs Moss

Looking across to Combs Moss.

Ladder Hill

As I walk along Foxlow Edge the Great Ridge comes into view.

Withinleach Moor

As I approach the highest point of Foxlow Edge I can look across Withinleach Moor to the rocks of Oldgate Nick.

The Street

Looking down on The Street as I start to drop off Foxlow Edge.

Foxlow Edge

Looking back to Foxlow Edge as I reach the gate onto The Street.

Ladder Hill

From Pym Chair I can look across what I think are Eccles Pike and Chinley Churn to the Kinder Plateau.

Ladder Hill

Looking across Ladder Hill towards the plateau and trying to pick out the features I know such as Mam Tor, although the overcast conditions don't help.

Castle Naze

As I look across Castle Naze enjoys a brief spell of sunshine, which helps to identify the wall and rocks at this spot.

Windgather Rocks

Looking across to Windgather Rocks.

Ladder Hill

The shadows and sunshine on Ladder Hill give me some hope that the blue sky at home might finally have travelled north with me.

Oldgate Nick

Looking back to Oldgate Nick as I head for Cats Tor.

Shining Tor

Looking along The Tors to Shining Tor from Cats Tor.

Foxlow Edge

Foxlow Edge from Cats Tor.

Cats Tor

From Cats Tor I make rapid progress along the slabbed path and soon find myself looking back to the summit of Cats Tor.

Cats Tor

Despite the promised sunshine it doesn't look like any is going to appear.

Shining Tor

When I reach the top of Shining Tor I make the small detour into Cheshire to get a picture of the trig.

Shutlingsloe

Whilst I'm there I take a shot across to Shutlingsloe and Crocker Hill.

Axe Edge Moor

Looking across to Axe Edge Moor. I did debate stopping for lunch here, as I enjoy the view, but it was a little too early for me and others were already sat eating their lunch.

Cats Tor

A final look back to Cats Tor before I leave Cheshire.

Stake Side

I decide to get the final ascent of the day out of the way and to then look for a lunch spot somewhere along Stake Side, hopefully with a view of the reservoir.

Whetstone Ridge

The final ascent over and done I can look across towards the Cat and Fiddle and Whetstone Ridge.

Shining Tor

It always amazes me that when you look back to Shining Tor from here you can't see the trig point.

Errwood Reservoir

Once the reservoir came into view I found a convenient looking slab, close to the wall and sat looking across the valley to Combs Moss.

Castle Naze

Just as I moved from my lunch spot the sun teased me again by lighting up Castle Naze.

Foxlow Edge

Rather than head straight down the hillside to the car park I opted to extend the walk and headed down Shooter's Clough. It also had the advantage of being easier on my knees.

Shooter's Clough

Looking back up Shooter's Clough before I head into the woods.

Errwood Reservoir

The reservoir soon comes back into view and it is only a short stroll back to the car from here.
